Cyprus has strong educational standards that are equivalent to those seen in other wealthy countries across the world.
The Cypriot education system is governed by the Ministry of Education and Culture at all levels: pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher education.
It also covers the enrollment of foreigners in Cypriot institutions. European residents living in Cyprus have the right to an education in public schools. Private elementary, secondary, and higher education establishments supplement the state-owned educational system and are also available to foreign people residing in Cyprus. Except in private institutions, which are predominantly English-speaking, classes are normally taught in Greek. Because Cyprus is a member of the EU and welcomes new expats, public schools provide extra intense Greek classes to pupils who do not speak the language. Private schools have tight uniform policies, whereas public schools are more relaxed and allow students to wear jeans and t-shirts.
Pre-primary school is required before beginning primary school. This one-year program accepts children as young as three.
Primary education is also required for children aged six to twelve. Lower secondary education, lykeio, and technical and vocational education are the three levels of secondary education. Only gymnasio is required for students aged 12 to 15, and it lasts three years.
In Cyprus, the school day begins between 7.30 and 08.00 and normally finishes between 13.15 and 14.00, depending on the school and grade level. Every day, students attend seven 40-minute classes with three 40-minute breaks.
The academic year is divided into three terms, which begin in September and finish in early June. The first term concludes before Christmas, while the second begins after January 6th and lasts through Holy Week (the week before Easter). The third term begins a week after Easter and finishes in early June. Christmas and Easter are the most major holidays of the school year, with each having a two-week vacation. Summer vacation begins in June and ends in September.
